Acupuncture has been used to treat a variety of ailments for thousands of years.  Only recently have scientists discovered how acupuncture works to help the body.  As the knowledge of acupuncture grows, so has the ability to use it to treat specific conditions.  At Moore Animal Hospital, we are pleased to be able to offer acupuncture as a treatment option for many medical conditions, including arthritis, pain, and neurologic conditions.

How does it work?

During a session of acupuncture, small sterile needles are placed in specific points around the body.  The needles are very small, and often the dog or cat doesn’t even notice them.  Many patients become so relaxed that they fall asleep during their treatments!   The needles affect the local nerves, muscles, and connective tissues in a way that can cause changes such as pain reduction, improved mobility, and improved nerve function.   This technique is drug-free and non-invasive.  Sometimes the doctor will use electroacupuncture to enhance the effects, or to treat areas that are too sensitive to place needles directly.

How many treatments will my pet need?

The specific treatment plan for your pet will depend on his or her unique diagnosis and response to treatment. Once our doctors have had the chance to evaluate your companion’s specific condition and its severity, you will be provided with a customized treatment recommendation.  Often results can be seen after just one treatment, but sometimes it takes two or three treatments for the effects of acupuncture to start.
