You probably know your dog pretty well. There’s a good chance that you can immediately list your pup’s cutest quirks, as well as his favorite things. (We suspect that bacon, car rides, long walks, belly rubs, and toys would be on that list for many of our canine patients.) But what about the things dogs don’t like? You may be surprised at some of Fido’s pet peeves. A Fort Collins, CO vet lists some of them below.
We can’t really blame Fido for this one: nobody likes getting yelled at. Although it can be frustrating to find out that your furry pal ate your shoe or got into the trash, punishing him for it isn’t the answer. Dogs don’t think like we do, and they don’t really understand punishment. This could just scare or confuse your pooch. Focus on rewarding good behavior.
Dogs are pack animals by nature. In the wild, they are rarely alone. Fido is more or less hardwired to be part of a pack. That’s why our canine buddies often get lonely, anxious, or depressed when they’re left alone. Spend lots of time with your pet!
Fido may not mind it if you hug him. Many pooches love to cuddle with their owners! However, you should never hug a strange dog. Hugs are actually a sign of dominance in doggy language.
Our canine pals really strive to please their humans. However, it’s important to remember that dogs don’t understand the nuances of language. If you tell Fido ‘Sit,’ one day, and then another day tell him ‘Fido, sit down right now!’ you may confuse him. It’s also important to stick to whatever rules you set. Don’t let your pooch nap on the couch one day, and then reprimand him for it another day.
Just like people, dogs need exercise to stay healthy. The type and amount of activity your four-legged friend needs will depend very much on Fido’s age, weight, health, and breed. Ask your vet for advice.
Dogs are very intelligent, and they don’t enjoy having nothing to do any more than you do. Make sure your furry buddy has plenty of toys, and take time to play with him daily.
